Your teen wants contacts. You want answers.
Back-to-school is the perfect time to talk about contacts. From sharper vision, to more freedom in physical activities, to a self-esteem boost, contact lenses can make a real difference in your child's life. Here's what you'll want to know.
See your kids perform their best
When it comes to performance in the classroom or on the field, ACUVUE® Brand lenses are hard to beat.
- Nine out of ten teens who wear both contacts and glasses choose contacts for sports or exercise.*
- Lenses allow more freedom of movement, excellent peripheral (side) vision necessary for a full field of view, and less distortion than glasses because the lens sits directly on the eye.
- In the classroom, clearer vision allows for deeper participation and understanding of materials.

When your kids see better and look good, they feel good
Another benefit of lenses is a nice boost to kids’s self-esteem. In a clinical study, kids say lenses dramatically improved their quality of life and confidence, thanks to their new appearance and their new freedom in activities.
Visit Why try contacts? Next questionThere’s no minimum age for contacts
Lots of teens, and even some pre-teens, wear lenses. The average age teens first get contacts is 13, but it has been shown that some younger children – even as young as 8 – are mature enough to wear and care for contact lenses. Successful lens wear depends more on responsibility and attitude than age.
It’s all about responsibility
If your child has already expressed an interest in contact lenses, you probably already know whether they’re responsible enough. If you can answer “yes” to the following questions, then your son or daughter is probably ready for contacts.
- Do they keep their grades up?
- Do they do their homework?
- Do they help out around the house?
But, if your child forgets to brush his or her teeth, or if personal hygiene isn’t a priority, then they should stick with glasses. At least for now. Your eye doctor will help you determine if lenses are right for your child.

When properly cared for and worn as instructed by an eye doctor, contact lenses are a safe and healthy vision correction option. Unlike eyeglasses, soft contact lenses won't break while you’re wearing them and they aren’t likely to pop out or be damaged in sports or other physical activities.
Plus, the technological advances found in ACUVUE® Brand Contact Lenses give wearers more healthy options than ever before. From the highest UV protection‡ available in a contact lens, to almost 100% transmission of essential oxygen to the eye, ACUVUE® Brand lenses can help keep eyes healthy for years to come.

Important information for contact lens wearers: ACUVUE® Brand Contact Lenses are available by prescription only for vision correction. An eye doctor will determine whether contact lenses are right for you. Although rare, serious eye problems can develop while wearing contact lenses. To help avoid these problems, follow the wear and replacement schedule and the lens care instructions provided by your eye doctor. Do not wear contact lenses if you have an eye infection, or experience eye discomfort, excessive tearing, vision changes, redness or other eye problems. If one of these conditions occurs, contact your eye doctor immediately. For more information on proper wear, care and safety, talk to your eye doctor, call 1-800-843-2020 or download the Patient Instruction Guide.
‡ Helps protect against transmission of harmful UV radiation to the cornea and into the eye. WARNING: UV-absorbing contact lenses are NOT substitutes for protective UV-absorbing eyewear such as UV-absorbing goggles or sunglasses because they do not completely cover the eye and surrounding area. You should continue to use UV-absorbing eyewear as directed. NOTE: Long-term exposure to UV radiation is one of the risk factors associated with cataracts. Exposure is based on a number of factors such as environmental conditions (altitude, geography, cloud cover) and personal factors (extent and nature of outdoor activities). UV-blocking contact lenses help provide protection against harmful UV radiation. However, clinical studies have not been done to demonstrate that wearing UV-blocking contact lenses reduces the risk of developing cataracts or other eye disorders. Consult your eye care practitioner for more information.
